Encouraging the sun's return - Imbolc

Welcome to the Wheel of the Year series, this year on each day that is celebrated in the Wheel of the Year I will share with you my thoughts and some of the history around these specific days.

The seasonal cycle of the year is created by the tilt of the Earth's axis, leaning towards or away from the Sun, North to South, as the Earth orbits the Sun.

I want to start by wishing you all a beautiful Imbolc, also known as candlemas. The festival of light, where we encourage the sun's return and celebrate the first signs of Spring. This festival also marks the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of Crone to Maiden.

Here in Sweden the snow is melting and we are noticing the first sprouting of leaves. We are celebrating the passing of Winter with long walks through the forests and we are making way for Spring by cleaning out our house and our minds of everything that is not needed anymore.

After the shut-in life of Winter the energy of Spring is very welcome.

Yule marked the birth of the returning sun, which started the process of the days beginning to lengthen, and it is Imbolc that marks the first stirrings of Spring:

The strengthening spark of light, piercing the gloom of winter.
— Janet and Stewart Farrar

The original word Imbolg means 'in the belly', and therein you have the underlying energy. It is the promise of renewal, of hidden potential, of earth awakening and life-force stirring. Here is hope. We welcome the growth of the returning light and witness Life's insatiable appetite for rebirth.

Now that we are moving into this new cycle I can feel the inspiration rise, the energy of new beginnings is in the air.  We are moving into new chapters, both in our personal lives as with Nabalo. There are so many cool projects in the making right now, and I’m really excited to share the details with you soon.

We passed our 6 month mark in Sweden yesterday (which is a really big deal for us), and with that a feeling of calm washed over us. After all of our travels it feels really good to be able to grow some roots.

And the energy of Imbolc fits our feelings so perfectly.

Purification and Initiation.

Happy Imbolc!
