Lifestyle talk with Zoe from Wunder Workshop
Dear Zoe, it’s so good to have you on our blog today. As the creator of Wunder Workshop, can you tell us a little bit more about why you started your brand and what your philosophy is towards your business?
As part of my 2014 New Year’s resolutions, I set a deadline that if I was unhappy with my life and job in six months’ time I would hand in my notice and start my own thing. This coincided with the amazing experience of visiting Sri Lanka with my late mother; we were privileged to spend a lot of time with Ayurvedic doctors and learned so much about herbs and the power of the food that we ate. Turmeric, as it turns out, is one of the most powerful spices we can consume. So shortly after my visit to Sri Lanka, I followed through with my initial plan and started Wunder Workshop – piecing together what I had learned about Ayurveda and the knowledge I had gained from my mother. When I look back, I am grateful for whatever courage resided in me at the time.
Our philosophy is inspired by Ayurveda and we want our products to be good for our customers as well as the planet and the people who provide our ingredients. We import our organic turmeric, and the majority of our other ingredients, directly from an independent organic farm in the heart of Sri Lanka, supporting its farmers and local community.
We had the pleasure to try out two of your creations, the Turmeric Chai tea and the Turmeric Cacao blend and they are delicious and super convenient on those busy days! We would love to know, if you were left in the woods with only one of your products, which product would you pick and why?
Thank you, I’m so glad you liked them! That is a tricky question. The Turmeric latte blends are very versatile and can be used for many things other than just making a turmeric latte, they are a great addition to smoothies, porridge or even pancakes…so I think I would pick our Instantly Golden Turmeric Chai blend.
Here at our Nabalo headquarters we are deeply connected to Nature, she is the source of our creativity, our muse! Could you tell us what keeps you motivated and inspired?
Absolutely, for me nature definitely also plays a big role as an inspiration. Living in a big and busy city such as London can be quite draining sometimes, so I make sure to escape to the countryside a couple of times a month. The moment I am alone in nature I feel much calmer and regain so much energy, it keeps me feeling thrilled by the possibilities and challenges that one encounters in running a business. I also get very inspired and motivated by going to interesting talks and meeting likeminded people, London offers so many opportunities which are so exciting!
Our mornings are sacred to us, we try to start our days with yummy beverages and lots of cuddles. Can you describe what your favourite morning ritual looks like?
I love mornings, they are my favourite part of my day, especially if it is sunny! I try and make sure to use the early morning to clear my mind, either through meditation or through my gratitude journal to be ready for whatever the day throws at me. I love making nurturing potions, followed by a big bowl of porridge which I usually eat it in front of the window whilst watching the world and the birds wake up.
What are you giving the world through your creations?
We aspire to give people an opportunity to consume this powerful spice, turmeric daily in many delicious ways. We strongly believe that through every penny you spend you cast a vote on what world you want to live in, so it is very important to us that we know the source of all our ingredients, to both provide a product that helps your body but also gives back to the local communities.
Thank you so much for giving us the chance to getting to know you and your products better, we are grateful that our paths have crossed. If you have to pick five little things that you are grateful for today, what would they be?
I am actually visiting my birthplace, Sydney, Australia for a couple of weeks so I am so grateful for being in this beautiful place, being able to soak up the sun, smelling all the tropical flowers, the sea breeze and the ability to do my work from the other side of the world.
Zoe learned about health and nutrition from her late mother, who had been in the health food industry for many years. T
his knowledge and motivation has led her to start up her own business. Having travelled with her mother to Sri Lanka to experience and learn more about Ayurveda, Zoe learned about turmeric and its benefits.
The following year she went back to Sri Lanka to establish a partnership with the suppliers of their most crucial ingredient, Turmeric, and begin her journey to starting Wunder Workshop.
Not long after she set up her first business, her mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away gracefully only a year later. This devastating journey has led her to also start Boobs’Essential, a skincare brand specifically for breasts, which creates cancer awareness and endeavours to make checking your breasts part of your daily self-caring ritual.
