Cacao Love Elixir

I am going to let you in on a secret...Cacao is magic!Cacao can change your mood, your health and your life! It changed mine and I am forever grateful.

Before I tell you my story I want to share some of the history of Theobroma Cacao also called the Chocolate tree.

The origins of the Chocolate tree are as mysterious as the magical chemistry contained within the fruit and seed itself. Some people believe that Theobroma Cacao was created by human cultivation, 10 to 15 thousand years ago by crossing the two wild strains of Theobroma Pentagona and Theobroma Leiocarpa.  While others believe that the tree is a wild South American Tree that was brought into Central America by the ancient Native American sea traders.

Human use of the cacao fruit and seeds is somewhere between 5000 to 15000 years old. In a village in present-day Honduras they found the earliest known archaeological evidence of cacao use. This pottery evidence of cacao use dates back to 2000 BCE.

The mayans inherited their basic cacao knowledge from the Olmec People and made it a central part of their civilization. On the Temple of the Wall Panels in the Yucatan they found carvings of a Cacao Tree. All over the Mayan areas of Central America cacao-shaped and cacao-depicting pottery was found. The Mayans were also the first major civilization that had cacao gods and to use cacao as currency.

In 1519 Hernan Cortes landed his fleet in Mexico, he took the Chocoholic Aztec Emperor "Montezuma" hostage and became a ruler of central Mexico. He returned to Spain in 1528 and took with him precious minerals, agricultural goods and most likely cacao beans. Cortes was probably the first to bring chocolate into Europe.

It was the Europeans who mixed this cacao with refined sugar. Because of that they changed the spirit of cacao's original intent of being a healing food. In 1828 a Dutch chemist named Coenraad Johannes van Houten went even further and created (and received a patent on) what we call Cocoa powder. Cocoa looks the same but it’s not. Cocoa powder is raw cacao that’s been roasted at high temperatures. Sadly, roasting changes the molecular structure of the cacao bean, reducing the enzyme content and lowering the overall nutritional value. So make sure to check if you are buying Cacao or Cocoa!

Back to my story! I have been into smoothies and healthy eating for some years now and I always preferred dark chocolate. But I had never made my own chocolate drinks from raw cacao. When I heard David Wolfe talk about cacao for the first time I was so amazed with his passion for this tree. I felt like I had been missing out on such a magical food for so long! That same day I went to my local health food store and bought my first bag of raw cacao and raw cacao butter. I mixed it into my smoothie and it created the most amazing drink ever! From that day on cacao became a daily essential.

When we moved from the US to Canada in 2013 I visited a health food store in Calgary called the Lightcellar. I can not explain the feeling I felt when I walked into that store the first time, I was home! I left the store (after 2 hours of browsing) with all sorts of superfood and a big bag of raw cacao! That day I created my first hot elixir.

See, cacao is an extraordinary source of the following minerals: magnesium, iron, chromium, vanadium, copper, zinc and phosphorus. Cacao is also a “delivery system.” Its theobromine dilates the intestines and cardiovascular system, allowing more nutrients to be absorbed.  So when I started to make these elixirs that were packed with super foods, super herbs, medicinal mushrooms and combined them with raw cacao I started to feel and see a difference in my health really fast! I felt better, my weight stabilized, my allergies disappeared, I looked better and my immune system became stronger every day. Cacao is good for your body and it is definitely good for your soul. Cacao contains the "Bliss Chemical" so it nourishes you on different levels, it's an aphrodisiac, and it's the most complex flavor in the world.

Let's not forget that cacao contains magic, it just does! My life has changed so much over the last year, and the only thing I changed was eating more cacao every day. It has given me back that child-like way of thinking, of celebrating life, of believing in my dreams and that I can do and become everything I want to be. Cacao is the food of the gods, it is sacred!

I will forever be grateful for chocolate and I advise everyone to bring this amazing tree into your life. Know it's history, what it does, how you can use it and most of all eat or drink it! I could go on and on about Cacao but I won't. This is a journey you have to experience yourself. I would love to hear your stories and answer your questions and I am here for you if you want to reach out to me! I will leave you with a simple but delicious elixir recipe.
